Temps above normal, rain below normal in May

Temps above normal, rain below normal in May

ATLANTA - Temperatures across the state of Georgia were above normal for the fourth straight month in May, according to the state climatologist's office.

In Atlanta, the average temperature was 1.1 degrees above normal, while elsewhere in the state, the difference was more pronounced with temperatures in Valdosta running has high as 2.7 degrees above normal. This made this spring the ninth warmest in Atlanta since 1878, when such records began being kept by officials.

Rain has been scarce across the state - so much so, that according to the state climatologist's office, a drought, which had been previously confined to the southernmost portions of the state, expanded northward. The south-central and southwestern portions of the state were the driest areas.

Much of the rain that did fall, came in the form of scattered thunderstorms, and the amounts that fell, were, much like the storms they came from, were varied and scattered.

ADOPT A PET: Meet Baxter

ADOPT A PET: Meet Baxter

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – If you dream of coming home to a wet nose, wagging tail and tons of kisses (in addition to, perhaps, a half chewed shoe or overturned trashcan) adopt a puppy from your local pet shelter. According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million domesticated animals enter animal shelters nationwide, every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. However, you can change those numbers but adopting a “companion” for yourself or your family. Pets are an investment but, in our opinion, an investment well worth the money.

Baxter, is a young male Black Lab who needs a new home. He currently lives with a family who work too much to adequately care for him. He’s about four years old and is housebroken. He likes children, playing fetch and going for walks. He is really good with kids and knows how to exercise patience. He is okay with cats however he does bark at them and chase them.

Residents are encouraged to "Keep it in Cobb" and purchase locally

Residents are encouraged to "Keep it in Cobb" and purchase locally

Cobb County --  District Three Commissioner JoAnn Birrell developed an initiative during her election campaign called "Keep it in Cobb," with the goal of generating awareness among residents, businesses and government entities to choose Cobb County businesses when making purchasing decisions. Buying local is a prime opportunity for Cobb's unemployed and underemployed to find additional work opportunities when purchases are kept local.

Keep it in Cobb has a three-tier approach and residents, businesses and government all benefit. With the initiative, residents and civic organizations have more community engagement, business owners get new, loyal customers and taxes are kept low while government maintains vital services.

Cobb school board hires new superintendent

Cobb school board hires new superintendent

Cobb County, GA-- In a special called meeting Sunday afternoon, school board members unanimously approved the hiring of Dr. Michael Hinojosa as the new superintendent.

Notably absent was boardmember David Banks who said he planned to vote against his peers' choice.  He said he was unable to attend Sunday's meeting because he only found out about it on Wednesday and was already scheduled to be out of town.

As boardmembers voted a small group of critics held protest signs and jeered the decision.

"We will vote you out of office for doing this.  You're doing this under the table without any feedback from the community," chided Cobb County resident Joyce Schumacher.

Things to Avoid When Holding an Open House

This weekend was national open house weekend. I had the opportunity to see an open house go wrong in a million dollar neighborhood, so I'm going to share some pointers to help your open house go smoothly.

1. Ensure that there are no malfunctions with the home. A defective air conditioner ruins the experience for everyone including the agent. You do not want the agent to be in a bad mood!

2. Have an agent who will not push prizes, giveaways, or follow prospective buyers as they look at the house. The idea is to make everyone comfortable and the way to do that is by making all information readilly available and be available to answer questions.

3. Have drinks and/or snacks on hand, especially on a hot afternoon. At a minimum, bottles icewater and soda is a must.
