High School Opera Institute to hold spring concert

ATLANTA -- Graduates of the Atlanta Opera's High School Opera Institute are getting ready to show off their amazing talent.

The students will perform arias and small ensemble pieces from some of opera's greatest works in a free spring concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5 at Morningside Presbyterian Church (1411 North Morningside Drive NE, Atlanta, 30306).

The High School Opera Institute (HSOI) is a training program for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing careers in music.

Participants in the eight-month program attend monthly workshops and vocal coachings on topics that include preparing and auditioning for a role, selecting a music school, characterization, diction and vocal technique.

LOCAL PROFILE: West Georgia Regional Summer Reading Program

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Although, local schools are on the cusp of summer recess students in the area will, no longer, back able to use summer as an excuse to impede their enrichment. The Douglas County Library System is sponsoring their annual summer reading programming for this year on June 2. The county offers programs for teens and children.

The reading program starts on June 2, this year, and end on July 14. The program will begin with a performance by Todd King, a professional juggler at 10:00 a.m.  On the first day of the program, children can come and retrieve their reading log, stickers and literary information sheet. Gift coupons from local businesses will be included in bags available upon registration.

Children are eligible to win different prizes according to how many stickers they accrue.

Every week, the library will hold programs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10:00 a.m.

Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs offers day camps, art camps, art performance camps, and tennis camps. In addition, there are many other camps offered by outside organizations in Cobb. The recent Camp Expo had a variety of camps represented, including ballet and dance camps, church camps, scout camps and more. Visit O’neal Plaza On May 7 for “Spring Concerts on the Plaza” which is being presented by the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville and Douglas County. The concert will be held between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. O’Neal Plaza is located at O’Neal Plaza and Church Street.

Neighbors can buy plants grown by master gardeners and receive growing advice at the Master Gardner Plant Sale in Carrollton. This event is one of the biggest events for the CCMGA and proceeds fund all of the diverse programs run by the association throughout the year. The sale will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Mableton, GA --  Roald Dahl's timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre in this stage adaptation of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory the weekend of April 29-May 1.

ATLANTA -- The Shuler Hensley Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theatre were announced at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on Tuesday, Apr. 26.

Forty-one Greater Atlanta-area high schools from 12 counties and 14 school districts, as well as private schools, participated this year.
