Six Flags has huge economic impact on Cobb County

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Georgia's two Six Flags theme parks had a combined economic impact of $194 million during their 2014 season, Cobb Tourism & Travel announced Tuesday.

Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell and Six Flags White Water in Marietta directly benefited Cobb County in several ways; park visitors spent their money on local hotels, transportation, entertainment, food and more.

"Six Flags Over Georgia and Six Flags White Water are powerful economic drivers and contribute significantly to tourism's overall impact in our county," Cobb Tourism & Travel CEO Holly Bass said in a release.

Cobb development authority changes tax break policy to appease schools

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Cobb County’s development authority has changed the way it will award tax incentives to companies that build in Cobb in an effort to get along better with the county’s school board.

Changes include that the development authority will notify school officials when a developer applies for tax incentives and plans to build in either the Marietta or Cobb school districts, and that each developer applying for tax incentives must pay for a cost benefit analysis to show the authority how many jobs are expected, as well as the development’s economic return, reports the Marietta Daily Journal.

The decision comes about five months after the development authority agreed to pay $17,000 in legal fees to the Cobb Board of Education’s law firm after the board challenged a tax break the authority granted a development in 2013, the MDJ adds.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- The Cobb County Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for its Next Generation Mentoring Program.

The program is designed to build relationships between current and future business leaders in the county. Mentors will provide professionals in their 20's and 30's with the skills they need to grow their careers and achieve their business goals.

Applications must be submitted no later than Tuesday, Sept. 2.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Aaron's Lease-to-Own has raised $15,000 for the Cobb County School District's Mentoring Matters program.

Cobb Mentoring Matters allows local residents, business owners and civic groups to mentor and donate money to students in need.

"I believe it is our responsibility to positively impact the lives of all individuals we encounter," Brett Ruffino, vice president of Aaron's in Marietta, said in a statement. "It is especially important to the youth that are willingly and enthusiastically lining up saying that they need and want mentorship."

Ruffino added that Aaron's is committed to making a positive impact on the community and the lives of its customers.

Aaron's employees participate in Cobb Mentoring Matters, but wanted to make an additional contribution -- hence, the $15,000 donation.

But according to new research, the biggest share what comes out of your holiday wallet actually goes to ... groceries and restaurants.

New data from Card-Linked Marketing leader Cardlytics -- collected from millions of U.S. households over the past two years -- shows what consumers actually spend their money on during the holiday season.  When it comes to holiday shopping Americans are spending 24% of their budget on groceries followed by restaurants and apparel.  Toy purchases are actually at the bottom of the list.
