AKA holding peace rally for middle school students

ATLANTA -- Members of metro Atlanta's chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will hold a peace rally and workshop for middle school students over the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Ivy Community Center in southwest Atlanta. It is part of the 40 Days of Peace project, which aims to spread service and kindness through the country.

The peace rally and workshop will aim to teach young people about Dr. King's mission, and to raise awareness of crime and crime prevention strategies. Law enforcement members will also give an interactive presentation to encourage children to stamp out gangs and bullying.

Middle school students from several metro Atlanta counties -- Cobb, Cherokee, Clayton, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale -- are expected to participate.

MABLETON, Ga. -- Mable's Tea Room is starting a new tradition this holiday season -- a Mommy & Me Tea event.

Teatime will be 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. Despite the name, dads and grandparents are also more than welcome to attend.

Prices range from $40 for a table for four to $80 for a table for eight. Prices include finger sandwiches, desserts, tea and a small gift.

POSTPONED: Saving Young Brains lecture hopes to curb underage drinking

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce has partnered with several Cobb County PTAs to present a panel on the dangers of youth binge drinking.

The Saving Young Brains event  at Turner Chapel AME Church in Marietta has been postponed, the new date has not yet been announced..

Jeff Dess, a prevention specialist with Cobb Schools Prevention Intervention Center, will facilitate the lecture, which aims to arm parents with tools for reducing underage drinking.

All parents with children ages 9-25 are invited to attend.

More than 2,000 JROTC cadets from 30 metro Atlanta high schools
to participate in historic fundraising effort

On Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th, visitors to metro Atlanta Kroger stores are likely to be met by a smiling, uniformed JROTC cadet with an Empty Stocking Fund logo, as more than 2,000 cadets representing 30 metro Atlanta high schools’ JROTC programs will be working outside metro Kroger stores to raise awareness of and contributions for The Empty Stocking Fund, an Atlanta-based, Atlanta-serving non-profit organization that has been providing holiday gifts to Atlanta’s neediest children since 1926.

Bi-partisan rally to drum up support for charter schools

ATLANTA -- A grassroots bi-partisan charter school rally is being planned for Saturday, Oct. 27.

The rally is being held by Moms for School Choice, Heritage Preparatory Charter School and Georgia's Voice for Educational Choice. It has grabbed the attention of members from both political parties.

"The theme of the rally is 'Charter Schools WORK!' because charter schools work for students, families, communities and Georiga," Mom for School Choice member Kimberly Cochran said in a statement.

So far, Ga. Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock), State Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan (D-Austell), DeKalb County Board of Education member Nancy Jester and Cherokee County Board of Education member Michael Geist are scheduled to attend the rally.

Terri Lyne Carrington to host master class at Pebblebrook HS

MABLETON, Ga. -- Grammy-winning jazz performer Terri Lyne Carrington will host a music master class for students at Pebblebrook High School this week.

The jazz class will begin at 12 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19. It is part of the Jazz in the Classroom program, which is sponsored by the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre's ArtsBridge program and Jazz 91.9 WCLK.

Jazz in the Classroom's goal is to provide young people with an opportunity to learn about music and the way it ties into their everyday lives and possible future careers. Earlier this year, the program sent Al Jarreau to Mays High School in southwest Atlanta.
