Registration for the 2014 Cobb County Senior Games is open until Aug. 8. Events will include basketball (three point shot and free throw), billiards, bocce ball, bowling, field events, golf, pickleball, putting, swimming, table tennis and track events. Registration is $20 for Cobb residents and $25 for non-residents. Bowling has an additional fee of $5 and includes three games and shoe rental. Golf has an additional fee of $40 and includes greens fees, cart, continental breakfast and lunch. Opening ceremony will be held Aug. 20 and closing ceremony Sept. 16. Race this weekend: Mableton 5K

MABLETON, Ga. -- The city of Mableton will kick off its Mableton Day festivities with a family-friendly 5K.

The race will be held Saturday, May 17, and will begin and end at the Mable House Arts Center. Race day registration will open at 7 a.m., and the race will be off and running at 8 a.m. A 1-mile Mableton Jr. fun run will follow at 9 a.m.

All participants are invited to stick around after the race for Mableton Day fun, including live entertainment, a car show and plenty of kids' activities.

Registration is $25 in advance and $30 on race day, and includes a T-shirt. The price for children under age 13 is $20 in advance and $25 day of. The Mableton 5K is sponsored by WellStar Cobb Hospital.

Mable House to host jazz festival

MABLETON, Ga. -- Cobb County's Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre will hold its 7th annual Atlanta Smooth Music Festival this September.

Jazz Grooves will present this year's event, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 13.

"The Mable House fits like a glove," Jazz Grooves managing partner Joe Cleveland said. "It's the right size. The Mable House is a good fit for what we are trying to do."

Scheduled performers for this year's event include saxophonist Kim Waters, bassist Gerald Veasley, keyboardist Gregg Karukas and trumpeter Cindy Bradley.

The Mable House is located at 5239 Floyd Road in Mableton.

KENNESAW, Ga. -- Cobb County residents who want to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs can do so this weekend.

The county will host a Medication Disposal Day on Saturday, Apr. 26.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., anyone who wants to get rid of outdated or unused medications is asked to bring the drugs to Cobb County Super Station 8, which is located at 2380 Cobb Parkway in Kennesaw.

Only medications will be accepted -- no durable medical equipment, such as nebulizers and CPAP machines, will be taken. All drugs will be sealed in boxes and safely destroyed.

Ga. Connections Academy accepting students for 2014-15 school year

(WXIA) -- A few seats are still available at Georgia Connections Academy for the 2014-15 school year.

Georgia Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school that allows students to learn at their own pace. It is fully accredited and open to all school-age Georgia children.

"We are enrolling 1,000 additional students across all grade levels for the coming academic year," lead principal Heather Robinson said in a release. "We have a waiting list as we open enrollment, so we encourage parents to get their applications in now."

Georgia Connections Academy will hold a number of information sessions across the state for parents who want to know more. Additional enrollment information is available at connectionsacademy.com/georgia-virtual-school.

Animal Control to hold Valentine's adoption event

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Cobb County Animal Control is hosting a special Valentine's Day event this week.

It will be Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The event was originally scheduled for Feb. 12, but was postponed due to last week's winter weather.

Attendees will meet adoptable pets while enjoying refreshments provided by the shelter. Those who want to bring home a new furry friend can do so for a discounted rate of $65.

Cobb County Animal Control is located at 1060 Al Bishop Drive in Marietta.
