WEEKEND EVENTS: Atlanta Football Classic, Chili Cookoff and Music Midtown

ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

Check out Jenny Owen Youngs at Unplugged in the Park. Park Tavern, 99X, Miller Lite and Bacardi have all come together to get music fans “up close and personal” with a number of today’s best singer-songwriters as we present the 2011 Unplugged in the Park Music series. Featured performers, included: Sonia Leigh, Alice Peacock, Angie Aparo and Matthew Perryman Jones to Unplugged newcomers like Griffin House, Ingram Hill, and Carbon Leaf, to up and coming locals Connor Christian & Southern Gothic, Blair Crimmins & The Hookers and The Whiskey Gentry. The concert will be held at Park Tavern; which is located at 500 10th Street NE in Atlanta.

On Sunday afternoon, the PAWS in the Park Dog Walk and Pet Expo will be held on Centennial Park.

The East Atlanta Village will be action-packed, this weekend. Come out for the 14th Annual East Atlanta Strut, which is a yearly one day extravaganza which includes live music, comedy, a 5K Run/Walk, Artists Market and food. The village is located at the intersection of Glenwood and Flat Shoals Road and the festival begins at 10:00 a.m.

The How Sweet the Sound Choir and Gospel Concert will be held at Philips Arena on Saturday, September 17. Organizers want you to “raise your praise hands ad experience and anointing as incredible choirs and gospel celebrities rock the house during this empowering evening”.

Several events to commemorate 10th anniversary of Sept. 11

Several events to commemorate 10th anniversary of Sept. 11

Cobb County --  The Kiwanis Club of Marietta will remember the 10th anniversary with its Field of Flags installation. As one of the largest commemorative events in the nation, a flag will be placed in Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park for each life lost on Sept. 11.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, the processional of flags will travel about one mile from Grace Community Church on Kennesaw Avenue to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Line up begins at 7 a.m. and the parade starts at 8 a.m., rain or shine.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, the memorial service in remembrance of the lives lost begins at 7:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle. The reading of names and ringing of bells will begin at 8:48 a.m. The flags will fly through Friday, Sept. 16. For more information, visit 911fieldofflags.com.

Residents are also invited to the 13th annual Festival of Music 7 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, at Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre.

DOWNTOWN: Georgia commemorates Sept. 11 attacks

ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal held a moment of silence for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, which took place 10 years ago this Sunday.

Deal led a brief memorial ceremony at the state Capitol Friday, flanked by Georgia's Chief Justice Carol Hunstein and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.

Deal also paid tribute to members of the military that have served in the wars that have taken place since the attacks on New York and Washington.

Deal did not speak to reporters. Spokesman Brian Robinson said the state is taking increased security precautions due to the anniversary, but he said there has been no mention of Georgia as a potential target.

Flags will be flown at half staff at all Georgia government buildings through sunset on Sunday.

This event does more than celebrate fashion; it enables designers to bring iconic fashion staples like the Diane von Furstenburg “wrap dress” to your front door. Showcasing the DVF fall collection, popular Paces Ferry boutique, Sandpiper will be holding a patio party on Thursday night.

And if you take a trip downtown, you have a shot at being a celebrity for a day.
