WEEKEND EVENTS: Dralion, Summer Shade Festival and German Bierfest Atlanta

ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

This weekend is the first week for Cirque du Soleil’s new show, Dralion, the show fuses together 3000-year-old Chinese acrobatic arts and the Cirque du Soleil approach. The show’s name is derived from dragons which symbolize the East and the lion which symbolizing the West. Dralion tickets are available at Ticketmaster and the show will be held at Philips Arena. Philips Arena is located at One Philips Drive in Atlanta.

Woodruff Park will play host to the German Bierfest Atlanta on Saturday. This is the eighth festival of its type and it will celebrate the greatness of German beer in a family environment. The festival will feature German food, activities, music and fun. The festival will be held from 2:00 p.m.

Elmo is coming to town!!

Well not exactly “our” town as in Cumming GA. But if you have little ones that love Sesame Street or if you just feel like going back to your childhood, then this is a GREAT reason to head into the “big city”!

Sesame Street Live is bringing “Elmo’s Super Heroes” to Phillips Arena September 8th – 11th.

A little about the show: “Poor Super Grover has lost his super-ness! Never fear, the fabulous five Super Heroes are here — featuring Elmo as Captain Fuzzy! Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Zoe and all their furry friends are on a quest to put the “super” back in Super Grover.

Atlanta Urban League Young Professionals 'Dream Catchers' Gala Honors Key Stakeholders in Atlanta

ATLANTA -- "What's Happenin' in SWAT (SW ATL)..." Did you know... On August 12, 2011 (7:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.), the Atlanta Urban League Young Professionals (AULYP) will host its annual signature awards gala, Dream Catchers.

The event which was designed to honor local community leaders who exemplify excellence in serving their community and high school seniors who demonstrate excellence in academics, will take place at the Bill Lowe Art Gallery (1555 Peachtree Street #100, Atlanta). Nina Brown of WXIA-TV 11 Alive News will serve as the mistress of ceremonies for the occasion.

This year’s award nominees represent key stakeholders in the Atlanta community who were identified based on their work in areas relevant to AULYP’s empowerment initiatives: education; economic growth; health and quality of life; civic engagement and leadership; and civil rights and racial justice.

Atlanta Urban League Young Professionals (AULYP) is comprised of young professionals across metro Atlanta who are dedicated to serving their local communities through social and community activism.

Kmart teams-up with Steve harvey to celebrate Local Mentors

Mableton -- Kmart will partner with “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” to ring-in the back-to-school season with a live, in-store broadcast featuring appearances by Steve Harvey and R&B artist Kelly Price.

To kick-off the back-to-school season and honor those who make a difference in the lives of local youth, the live remote will allow guests to learn about Kmart’s key products and services, including school supplies, exculsive brands and apparel as well as online and in-store layaway payment options.

Two hundred guests will have the opportunity to take part in a live broadcast of “The Steve Harvey Morning Show,” featuring a performance by R&B artist Kelly Price. During the broadcast, Kmart will encourage customers to become a part of the Protege Giveback Movement, a campaign sponsored by Protege sportswear footwear and apparel exclusively available at Kmart that strives to promote mentorship and good citizenship.

Cobb Chamber announces Public Safety nominees

COBB CO., Ga. -- The Cobb Chamber of Commerce plans to recognize its county's finest during Public Safety Appreciation Week.

The special ceremony will take place Monday, Oct. 3 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, kicking off a weeklong community effort to celebrate everyday heroes.

Preparations for October began earlier this year, when residents, government officials, local agencies and community leaders nominated personnel for the Public Safety Employee of the Year award.
