School district participates in 5 Million Meals

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Cobb County School District was recently honored for its work with the 5 Million Meals campaign.

Cynthia Downs, Cobb's nutrition director, accepted the Golden Radish Award at the Georgia State Capitol Tuesday.

The 5 Million Meals challenge was introduced last October by Georgia Organics. Its goal is to make 5 million meals with locally grown food and serve them in K-12 cafeterias across the state.

Downs pledged her support to the cause by increasing the amount of local food served in Cobb County cafeterias. She was honored for her hard work by Georgia School Superintendent Dr. John Barge, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and Georgia Organics President Rashid Nuri.

Cobb Toilet Rebate Program

Cobb Toilet Rebate Program

Cobb:  You might be surprised to know that the biggest water waster inside you house is your toilet. That's why a lot of metro Atlanta counties are practically giving away low flow toilets threw rebate programs.

Kathy Nguyen isn't shy or bashful when it comes to talking about toilets. She works for the Cobb Water Department but she also participated in their toilet rebate program.  "I have seen our water bill drop by a 1000 gallons and for us that's pretty significant sense our average use is really around 3000 gallons a month... We're down to 2000 gallons a month," Kathy said.

Summer in Georgia & peaches for weeks: What to do with those sweet GA peaches

Summer in Georgia & peaches for weeks: What to do with those sweet GA peaches

Atlanta, GA --  The blog Running With Tweezers has a great article including a variety of great recipes for this year's peaches.  If you have had one of this year's peaches you know they are just delicious!!!  Whether you want to make ice cream, a cake or a cobbler, @RunningWithTweezers.com has the perfect recipe for you.

Around here, we’re really fortunate to have summers full of local peaches. Growing up, they were one of my dad’s favorite foods and they made appearances at our house fairly regularly. Sliced on pound cake or angel food cake, on top of cottage cheese the old school way. In the colder months, he’d even eat canned peaches straight up with a spoon. While I’m not a proponent of the tinned variety, I’m a huge fan of the fresh ones grown here in the South.
