Atlanta Opera High School Opera Institute to give concert

ATLANTA -- The 11 talented local students who participated in this year's Atlanta Opera High School Opera Institute will give a special concert next month.

The institute, which is one of only a few programs of its kind in the U.S., puts high school students through a rigorous audition process and offers eight months of workshops, vocal coaching and other courses for young people who are interested in pursuing music careers.

In the three years the Atlanta Opera has offered the program, 11 of its graduates have gone on to study music at universities and conservatories across the country.

A Cobb County library will be holding a 'Lunch & Learn' to commemorate Holocaust

COBB -- Staff at Mountain View Regional Library will host a National Holocaust Commemoration Week lunch and learn 1-2:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 25, in the library's community room.

The event will feature Dr. Eugen Schoenfeld, education director at the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust. Dr. Schoenfeld is a Holocaust survivor and will discuss his experiences as a prisoner in the Auschwitz, Warsaw, Dachau and Muehldorf concentration camps during World War II.

Merry Christmas from Gov. Deal

ATLANTA -- Governor Nathan Deal issued a special holiday greeting for Georgia residents on Friday.

As Christmas nears, I wanted to wish every Georgian a merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.

Christmas has a special way of reminding us what is really important: our faith in God, family and the well-being of our fellow man.

But Christmas is not limited to a single season or date on a calendar. These feelings of peace and love are always with us throughout our lives. For many, Christmas serves as a rejuvenation of these values and ideals.

After the gifts are all unwrapped and the candles begin to dim, our spirits will once again be enriched and fully restored.

As we reflect on all we have been able to accomplish this past year, we will cary this rejuvenated spirit to achieve all the goals that we have set for the coming years.

Cobb employees support charitable organizations

The Cobb County Friendship Club was recently honored with the Prevention Award by SafePath Children's Advocacy Center. The organization was recognized for making significant contributions to preventing child abuse and neglect in our community. The second Friendship Club Allocation Ceremony of 2011 was also held recently and representatives from 32 charitable organizations accepted donations from Cobb employees totaling $43,000.

The Friendship Club was established in 1972 as a voluntary way for county employees to provide monetary support to community service agencies. Since its inception, about $1.5 million has been distributed to worthy causes. In 1991, the club expanded its mission to provide assistance to county employees who experience an unforeseen emergency situation. To date, more than $300,000 has been provided to help employees in need.

Announcing the 2011 Teacher IMPACT Grant recipients

COBB COUNTY, Ga. (CCSD CobbCast) -- The Cobb Schools Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 Teacher IMPACT Grants.

A record 117 teachers, administrators and specialists applied for this district-wide distinction. The foundation was able to whittle the number down to 14 projects, which received more than $20,000 in cash and gifts.
