11 Alive hosts Hero Central, where YOU can help with "Curing Kid's Cancer".  All day this Friday.

Atlanta, GA--  11Alive has a chance for you to be a hero and help fight cancer in children.

We are hosting a Hero Central this Friday where you become the Hero. The money you give will go to ‘Curing Kid’s Cancer’ a local group raising money for research. It was started by parents who lost their child to cancer. 

We hope you’ll join us and help Friday from 11am to 8pm here at 11Alive.

District One Commissioner Helen Goreham was sworn in for her new term on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Judge Juanita Steadman conducted the ceremony, which was held in the BOC Room on the second floor of 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta.   For more information on district one, visit cobbcounty.org/goreham.

 

District Three Commissioner-elect JoAnn Birrell will be sworn into office 4 p.m., Monday, Jan. 3.

Upcoming Talent Auditions for 25th annual countywide Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

Performers seeking to be part of the entertainment at the 25th annual Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration will have the opportunity to audition 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28, as well as 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 6, and 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8. Auditions will be held at Jennie T. Anderson Theatre in the Cobb Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway, Marietta. Audition slots are limited. Those selected from audition will take part in the Jan. 17 ceremony, sponsored by the Cobb County NAACP and Cobb County Government. The event is free and open to the public. It will include the annual presentation of the "Living the Dream" award to a member of the community who exemplifies the ideals King stood for.

Space on Santa's sleigh is at a premium, thanks to MIC members and friends who will be a Secret Santa to more than 50 kids (and counting....) at the Mableton Boys & Girls Club this year!

Students and Parents Encouraged to Attend College Fair on Tuition Assistance

Atlanta, GA--  Councilman Aaron Watson and School Board member, Yolanda Johnson have teamed up with The Scholarship Academy in an effort to help Atlanta students and parents secure funding for college.  The "I am College Material" Fair will take place on Wednesday 11/17 from 4pm-8pm at the Atrium in Atlanta City Hall.

The Federal Pell Grant and Georgia HOPE are both facing major shortages in the coming years, and the councilman want families to start planning now for their educational futures.

The Scholarship Academy is a local nonprofit scholarship preparatory program that has launched this "I am College Material" Scholarship Fair.  

The event will introduce “average students” to the private scholarship application process.

Mableton Man Finally Claims his $116M Powerball Jackpot

Atlanta, GA--  The winner of the $116 million Powerball jackpot on Sept. 18 has stepped forward. Gerald L. Render, 46, claimed the prize Friday afternoon as Nichelle Leando LLC in Mableton.

“We are thankful and humbled,” said Render, a local businessman. “We understand that with it comes the responsibility of good stewardship.”

Nichelle Leando LLC selected the cash option and will receive $63,050,993 before taxes.

Winning numbers from the Sept. 18 drawing were: 1-18-37-39-44 and the Powerball was 13.

The Quik Pik jackpot ticket was purchased at Heby’s Shell, 4360 Floyd Road, Mableton.

Any Georgia Lottery retailer who sells a winning Powerball jackpot ticket can earn the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus payment. If more than one winning jackpot ticket is sold in Georgia, the retailer selling the winning tickets will share the $25,000 retailer incentive bonus.
