'Bring One for the Chipper' after Christmas

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- After taking the lights and ornaments off your Christmas tree, do some good for the environment and recycle it into mulch.

Georgia's Bring One for the Chipper program turns used Christmas trees into useful natural materials. Trees will be accepted at several locations throughout Cobb County from Dec. 26 to Jan. 7.

Locations include:

Kennesaw
* Noonday Creek Park, 489 Hawkins Store Road

Marietta
* Fullers Park, 3499 Robinson Road
* Harrison Park, 2650 Shallowford Road
* Sewell Park, 2085 Lower Roswell Road

Powder Springs
* Lost Mountain Park, 4845 Dallas Highway

Task force to arm parents with tools to prevent teen drinking

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Despite being among the top three killers of Americans under age 21, many parents do not seem to realize that underage drinking is a major problem.

The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce is partnering with the PTAs at local schools to give parents an important skill set to prevent teen drinking. A meeting for all Cobb parents will be held Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cobb Central Library.

Several local experts will give insight into this growing issue, including Cobb Alcohol Taskforce coordinator Cathy Finck.

"The brain goes through dynamic change during adolescence, and alcohol can seriously damage long and short term brain growth processes," Finck said. "The research is compelling, but more parents need to know about it. We hope arming PTAs will help get the facts and useful tips to more parents for saving teen brains."

MARIETTA, Ga. -- For low-income families with young children, a few diapers can turn into a priceless gift.

Many people do not realize that food stamps cannot be used to buy hygiene products, including diapers. The average family with small children spends about $100 a month on diapers -- an expense that some low-income families cannot afford to shoulder.

LOCAL PROFILE: Georgia's Country Music Scene

ATLANTA – According to the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, “country music is a perennial Southern favorite in Atlanta and it won’t disappoint”. The music, which has its roots in the south, is known as a blend of, both, traditional and popular music. The country music genre gained widespread popularity around the mid-1900’s as music known as “hillbilly” or old-time music began to decline. Hillbilly music was a genre of music native to the people of the Ozarks. The music was usually played on acoustic instrument like a guitar or a banjo.

Over the years, old-time music changed however most of the lyrical content and instrumentation stayed the same. As it evolved, the arrangement of instruments grew to include the electronic keyboard, drums, the bass, fiddle and the harmonica.
